OUIL401 - Studio Brief 3 - Critical reflection and proposal

In terms of prestige, politicians and satirists have switched places. A successful satirist like Armando Iannucci is respected in a way that no current political leader is. As a result, he enjoys a degree of soft, cultural power that politicians can only dream of. He probably lives in a bigger house, drives a nicer car and earns a higher annual income than most of them, too.

Rationale

My research in COP2 will focus on the human face and how people’s perception and opinion can change when a face is altered or distorted. My COP1 research has made me realise how a person’s face can cause conflict, hope, lust and many other emotions. Faces such as Donald Trump and Barrack Obama can cause highly divisive emotions for different people. My direction in COP1 of distorting reality led to using faces in my illustrations, changing their appearance and twisting the audience’s perception. I want to manipulate and distort both famous and nonfamous faces to see how it might change an audience’s response. I will look at aspects such as beauty and gender and ask questions of my own viewpoint of these subjects. I will also look at the primal and evolutionary process of how we identify so strongly with the human face, it’s many facial expressions and how we respond to them. People can be judged on their faces alone for good and bad reasons and I want to research the consequences of doing this and how changing the context and environment of faces can change people’s judgement.

Subjects

Artificial Intelligence
I will look at how tech companies are developing technology to identify facial recognition as well as future robot technology similar to the Humans tv show. Is it possible to ever create a perfectly human looking robot?

Gaming Industry
I want to explore the accelerating technology of video games’ ability to create lifelike aesthetics and the character creation process. How does a new character’s face dictate it’s personality traits?

Female/ Male roles in the media
From my male viewpoint, how do I perceive women and men in the media and how distorted and different is that viewpoint from my day to day experience.

Facial Attraction
Trends and fashion dictates what aesthetically is termed ‘attractive’ but are there evolutionary features that still apply in modern civilisation?

Masks and make up
How do women and men change their appearance? Do they change their appearance to look more attractive, powerful, tough? Why do people distort their face, for themselves or others?
